Description
The stone crosses witness the
early Christianization of the west coast
and were probably raised during the 10th
and 11th centuries. Such crosses are to be
found in the counties of Rogaland,
Hordaland, Sogn and Fjordane. The smallest
ones are about 2 metres high whilst the
largest could be up to 4 metres in height.
The shape of the crosses seems to be
inspired from England and Ireland.
A common trait is that the crosses are
raised at old grave places. This tells us
that they were made prior to the
establishment of the Christian church (not
organised or established yet). For us
today, the crosses are strongly visible in
the landscape, still a proof of the new
belief and the new ideology that arrived
in the end of the first millennium.
