Vestvågøy - 24 Borg House Remains Site/Artefact Borg II Type House remains Site Number Nr 5 NGO Grid Reference 22530,6 1141843,2 List of Sites and Artefacts Click Here Interactive Map Click Here Description Borg II:1-3 contains three house sites and a partly preserved fence, situated east of The Chieftain's house (Borg I). Both areas seem to have been settled and used throughout the later part of the Viking Age. About AD 950, the Chieftain's house is being abandoned, at least pulled down and out of use, while the settlement at Borg II house 1, continues until the end of AD 1000. The function of the settlement and activity area at Borg II is still debated, but house remains and artefacts point to a single farm unit (House 1) with small activity areas like House 2 and 3. Could the size of the houses at Borg II and the artefacts found here, tell us about the use of the whole area at Borg and the changes from paganism towards Christianity? What kind of changes seem to happen at Sacred Heights at Borg? Excavation Details Borg II represents a settlement area, situated east of the Chieftains house: Borg I:Ia and Borg I:Ib. This area consists of three house remains: Borg II: 1-3. Borg II:1 is a longhouse about 20.8 x 6.3 m, typical in the period around AD 900.  The two other house remains Borg II:2 and Borg II:3 measured 4.4 x 2.4 m and 3.3 x 2.0 m. House 1 and 2 could have been built at the same time. House 3 seems to be the oldest house in the settlement area at Borg II. Analysis from the house remains indicates an active settlement period parallel to the Chieftains house (Borg I). After the abundance of the Chieftains house, Borg II: house 2 is still in use (AD 1000).
