Mid-Argyll - 6 Dún Chonaillach Site/Artefact Dún Chonaillach Type Dun Site Number National Grid Reference 1854 East 7036 North Map ( 1:25000) Ordnance Survey Explorer No 358 List of Sites and Artefacts Click Here Interactive Map Click Here Excavation Details This site has not yet been excavated but a survey was carried out on part of the wall and a stone gaming board of Early Historic date was found. Description This stone-walled fort is situated on a rocky hill overlooking the Abhainn Airidhcheodius. It measures about 37m by 16m and has been recently disturbed by the building of a film set and vandals. Part of the wall had been recorded as standing 2m high (nineteen courses). It varied in thickness from 1.5m to 4.5m. The interior of the fort is mainly occupied by a steep rocky area but part is relatively level and there are various ruined stone foundations (as well as a modern round house built for the film set). A second series of out works protected the lower slopes of the hill, traces of which are visible. Access/Ownership This site is on private land and permission should be sought.
